THE TITLE "NEOGEUREOI" IS A KOREAN WORD WHICH MEANS, "WITH A WIDE HEART AND GENEROSITY." I TOOK THIS ATTITUDE TOWARD FORM. IN OTHER WORDS, I TOOK A MORE GENEROUS ATTITUDE TOWARD FORM. I DECIDED TO MAKE A SOFA. THE REASON WAS THAT THE SOFA IS THE MOST STEREOTYPED PRODUCT LINE. I WANTED TO BREAK THAT STEREOTYPE.
This work was completed by my hand alone from furniture frame to fabric finishing, and it was for my graduation exhibition (bachelor's degree).
Before designing a sofa, I thought about what a real comfort is. Along this process, I came to this question. The question was : Why should sofas be shaped? I was inspired by piles of blankets and pillows in the Jangrong (korean wardrobe) that people used frequently in Korea in the past. Things like quilt and embroidery pillows I saw at my grandmother's house during my childhood make me feel really comfortable. I recalled a scene of a thickly protruding blankets when opening the wardrobe. With this inspiration in mind, I made a frame which has two sides with different heights. I have placed a drawer on the higher side, so that the user could pull the drawer out and lie down in a straight line. Through this work, I would like to question the shape of the sofa that has been stereotyped. What is true comfort?
